What Jonah wasn't alive??

So a few days ago I was watching Perry Stone on Daystar.  He was talking about Jonah and the whale.  Now from as far as I could remember I always thought Jonah was ALIVE in the belly of the whale.  BUT upon reading the text over It's aparent that he was not alive but infact dead.

Starting in Jonah chapter 1 and verse 17.  It doesn't say he was alive or dead in this verse but only he was swolled by a fish (whale.)  It says in Jonah 2:1 that Jonah prayed Outside the belly in the King James Version.
